Miscellaneous FAQs
What is the one pound film?
Each term LU Cinema has a film 'One Pound Film' which is exactly what it says on the tin, all tickets regardless of whether you have a red card, purple card library card, are one pound. The OPF was introduced in 2007 as hopefully a good way to encourage people to take a chance and see a type of film they wouldnt normally have seen. Films chosen are generally arthouse or foreign films, and past examples include A Guide to Recognising Your Saints, Lust Caution, Keane, Paris Je'Taime and The Counterfeiters
Do you show DVDs?
Generally we do our best in acquiring 35mm copies of films and that is the format we show films on 99% of the time. Sometimes though films may not be available on 35mm and so we show the DVDs. However we dont just walk into a shop buy it then show it. All dvds we show are provided by our distributor and cost the same amount as 35mm print would.
How do you pick what films end up on the schedules?
Every term, generally in week 8 the cinema executive get together for a meeting to decide the next terms list. The films are whittled down from a large list of possibe titles (generally around the 50-70 mark) through general arguments, deals and force of will. Since, especially for michlemas term, the list is done so far in advance obviously its difficult to get all the films we should have got on and some rubbish films slip by, this is the reason we showed The Rise of the Silver Surfer so our apologies if you came to see it.
Why have you never shown an Evil Dead film for the halloween all nighter?
Every year we try and every year we find out its not available but we promise to keep trying.
