Safety Information

LUSU has a strong commitment towards the safety of its members. We have several procedures and policies in place to ensure that all activities are carried out safely and still contain the element of fun. We are not here to say no, we work towards making all activities as safe as possible.

Accidents happen and that is fact. However, if an accident does occur you need to know how to deal with it. If you have accounted for all hazards in an activity and an accident still occurs you cannot be accused of being negligent.

We hold annual Duty of Care briefings which are compulsory for the relevant exec members and also produce a Safety Framework booklet (see below). Both the briefing and the booklet are aimed at giving you information about your responsibilities and help and guidance for running your activities safely.

Joint Responsibility

Please be aware that keeping up to date and making your activity safer is the responsibility of both you and LUSU. You should be making every effort to become aware of the issues in your activity and if necessary draw them to our attention. Don't wait for us to take the initiative if you think something needs to be done better tell us.

Take it seriously...We do.

We run briefings relatively rarely where safety is concerned but when we do run them attendance is compulsory. Please make sure you know when they are and where they are and that the right people attend them and then if you need to do something afterwards make sure you do it. We have your interests in mind.

If you are in any doubt about your activity and safety then come to the Student Activities Office and ask. We are here to guide you and if we don't know the answer then we will make every effort to find out for you.

Duty of Care Group Statement

What is 'Duty of Care'?

This section and the following sections are intended to provide you with the current policy documents that you should all be complying with whether it is your own Safety Codes of Practice or LUSU policy documents relating to activity safety.

If there are any other documents that you would like to have easy access to through this page please get in touch and we can either provide links or upload then for you.

Risk Assessments and Codes of Practise

Everyone now has their new completed Risk Assessment and Code of Practice for 2007 onwards. Keep a copy of these for your records and understanding, please remember that if your activities change then you will need to update your risk assessment and code of practise. All the groups risk assessments and codes of practice can be found at the bottom of this page.

Please remember that if you decide to undertake an event or an activity that does not usually form part of what you do then you should seek advice. You may have to undertake a separate Risk assessment of this as a one off.

Risk Assessment Forms & Information

If you are doing an event or starting a new activity then you will need to do a risk assessment. If you need to do a risk assessment, all the documents and supporting information you should need are above in the appendices of the Safety Framework. If you need any further information then contact Alisdair (activities Developer).

Individual Risk Assessments & Safety Codes of Practice

The following are societies individual Risk Assessments (RA) and Safety Codes of Practice (CofP) which your society MUST operate by. If you wish to alter any of these you must only do so after consultation with the Activities Developer, Alisdair Denholm.

If you alter these without agreement then any liability in the event of a serious incident or accident will be solely yours.

If your society's Risk Assessment or Safety Code of Practice does not appear here and you fall into one of the high or medium risk societies then you must make an appointment to see Alisdair Denholm as soon as possible. You should NOT operate without having a Safety Code of Practice. If you have not been required to undertake a full Risk Assessment of your activity then you should assume that you are a low risk activity in which case you should only need to seek guidance if you plan to undertake an activity that falls outside of your usual operations.
