Once you have chosen a position that you think may appeal to you, several things need to be done:
- Read the full description of the post in the GSA constitution.
- Be aware of the time requirements: each post requires about 2 to 3 hours a week.
- Complete and return a nominations form, see below.
- Attend the open meeting (optional).
- Attend the candidates meeting.
- Attend the hustings/question time.
Nominations Form
Copies are will be available on a table in the Graduate Porter's Lodge, from Jane Hulland (College Administrator), and are available to download and print below:

- Ask 2 people to act as proposer and seconder. These must be graduate students, and if a special restriction applies to your post (eg. Womens' Officer must be a woman), these restrictions also apply to the proposer and seconder (eg. they too must be women).
- When completed, return to the GSA pigeonhole in the Porter's Lodge.
- Once you hand in your nominations form, write your name in the appropriate place on the Elections Noticeboard in the Graduate Porter's Lodge.
- You may run with a friend for one position as a job-share and spread the work between you. You must still satisfy all the position requirements, and neither of you may act as a proposer or seconder.
Nominations by Post or Email
Nominations can also be posted to: "GSA, Graduate College, Lancaster University, Lancaster, LA1 0PF"
Alternatively you can send an e-mail to gsa_assistant@hotmail.com from your Lancaster University email account (yourname@lancaster.ac.uk).
Copy and paste the following file into the e-mail, and fill in all the details:

GSA Open Meeting
This will be held before nominations close. The GSA Open Meeting is an opportunity to talk in person to the GSA executive committee and other candidates and find out more about the GSA and what the positions involve. This meeting is optional to attend.
Candidates Meeting
Held, 1 hour after nominations close, the candidates meeting is where candidates are briefed about the workings and rules of hustings, manifestos, campaigning, and the elections. Assistance is also available to write manifestos and prepare for hustings. Anyone unable to attend must send apologies to the Chief Returning Officer, at gsa_assistant@hotmail.com.
Hustings/Question Time
Candidates give a short speech about themselves, what they plan to do in office, and why people should vote for them. At the end of the speeches for each position, the candidates are then asked questions by the graduates attending the hustings. Candidates unable to attend must send apologies to the Chief Returning Officer, at gsa_assistant@hotmail.com, and can send a short speech to be read by the Chair-person. Failure to do so may lead to expulsion from the election race.
All graduates are welcome to come and ask questions.
Elections
Voting is for the GSA and LUSU non-sabbatical positions, including Post-Grad, Part-Time Students, Mature Students, and International Students Non-Sabbatical Officers.
