Area maintained by Antony Chung

Sunday 1st July - Anti-smoking legislation comes into force

In the UK, it is now illegal to smoke in enclosed public areas (including vehicles) such as pubs, clubs, covered bus stops, and taxis.

Anyone who smokes in a smoke-free area will be committing an offence and is liable to a fine of up to £ 200. It is also an offence for those who manage or control such areas to fail to prevent smoking taking place, resulting in a fine of up to £ 2,500.

In Graduate College, this means that you are not permitted to smoke in the bar, games room, PC lab and common room, porters' lodge, meeting room and all office space.

If you live in a smoking flat you will still be permitted to smoke in your room but not in any shared areas, such as kitchens.

Common Room

The refurbished common room has a large meeting table to use for group meetings/projects etc., so you do not have to wait for the meeting room to be free. There is also wireless internet access in both the common room and the bar so you can work in whichever suits you best.

We fought really hard for many years to get the refurbishment so please use the space.

  • Polite Reminder

This is a polite reminder to all residents that the Dean of the college expects reasonable noise levels at all times, especially between the hours of midnight and 7am and especially at the moment as many of your neighbours (both postgraduate and undergraduate) have exams.

He also wishes to remind you all that at the end of this term there will be three nights of disturbance (26th-28th June) when the college Extravs take place. The Extravs are outdoor music events which generally run from early evening until 2am. Cartmel, Lonsdale and Graduate all have their extravs on the same night so as to minimise disturbance to residents. The extravs from the other colleges will be audible from Graduate, although not quite as loud. He suggests that you arrange your schedules so you are not trying to do important work during these noisy events as you will end up getting angry and frustrated.

    Exam Stress

If you are experiencing any stress from your exams there is advice you may find useful on the student support website. Don't forget that if anyone is disturbing your sleep at this stressful time, you should call the porter to report it on 93194.
