GSA
If you are a postgraduate student then you are already a member of the Graduate Students' Association (GSA), Graduate College's equivalent of the undergraduate JCRs.
The GSA committee, a group of unpaid, elected students, organises social activities, trips, sports teams and provides academic and welfare support to graduate students.
We also represent postgraduate students' views to LUSU (the students' union), the college authorities, the university, and beyond.
Get involved with the GSA and help make Graduate College a better place
LUSU
Lancaster University Students' Union (LUSU) is where all students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, can come together to have their voices heard. LUSU also supports a large number of clubs and societies, provides a comprehensive advice service and runs a number of commercial operations (shops and a club) whose profits go to support student representation and activities.
The LUSU building is located underneath the SPAR supermarket, just off Alexandra Square.
Like the GSA, the Students' Union is run by students, for students, and all decision are taken by democratically accountable elected members. You will have a chance to vote for LUSU postgraduate representatives & many other positions in early December. Once again, on joining the University, you automatically became a member of LUSU.
LUSU provide several forms of student ID and discount card - the Red Card which is free to all, the Purple Card which provides a wide range of discounts and allows you to, amongst other things join Clubs and Societies as well as NUS Extra which gives access to nationally arranged discounts.
National Representation
Through LUSU you also become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS) which represents our views on a national level, lobbying the government, UniversitiesUK and other bodies which effect our lives as students. Being a member of NUS also gives you access to a number of discounts, including an Amazon.co.uk discount.
The GSA is also a member of the National Postgraduate Committee (NPC) who act much like the NUS, but in the interests of postgraduate students only. Whilst being a much smaller organisation, the NPC gives Lancaster students a route to discuss issues of common interest with postgrads at other UK universities.
