Before Joining

  • How do I sign up?
  • Simply fill out and submit this form

  • Does it cost anything to join?
  • No. Language Swap is completely free.

  • Is Language Swap only for graduates?
  • No. It is run by the Graduate Student Association (GSA), but anyone who has a Lancaster email address can join.

  • I don't know any other languages – can I still take part?
  • Yes, you can. But you will get the most out of it if you are already learning another language.

  • There's too many languages – how can I choose?
  • You don't have to! Simply choose 'Any' in the 'Languages to Practise' selection box.

  • Why do I need a Lancaster email address?
  • To ensure you are a member of the university, and so you are accountable.

  • Will you share my details?
  • We will use your data only for the purpose intended: We will share your details with another participant when we have matched your languages, and will only send them to another Lancaster email address.

  • What about the optional information?
  • No personally identifiable information be shared – we collect it to find out a bit more about who is using the service.

    After Joining

  • How long until I get paired up?
  • Unfortunately, we cannot even guarantee that we will find you a language match, especially in some of the more obscure languages. However, the automated database will spot any potential matches. Please don't give up hope, and tell anyone you think may be interested to get involved – the more people taking part, the greater the likelihood of matches!

    After Starting

  • I can't continue meeting my partner. What should I do?
  • Please politely inform your language partner that you are not continuing your meetings, and remember to thank them!

  • My language partner has left! Can I get another?
  • Send an email asking to be put back on the database.

  • I don't get along with my language partner. Can I get another?
  • Please politely inform your language partner that you are not continuing your meetings, and send an email asking to be put back on the database.

  • I want to learn two languages at the same time. Is this possible?
  • Yes, though we would normally recommend concentrating on learning one language at a time. Send an email to the address above, explaining what you want to do.

  • I have another question, not answered here.
  • Send your question by email to:
