Session Descriptions

Below is each of the sessions which will be available and a synopsis of what will be covered in that session.

Understanding the Union and Societies Union

What can the Union do for you? What support does the Union provide? What is expected of the Union? What relationship is there between Societies and the Union? These questions and more will be answered in a session intended to provide you with all the information you need about LUSU. It will also include how your society can make sure it gets fair representation.

Running a Productive Meeting

Running a meeting can be a stressful ordeal. Keeping everyone in check and making sure no one speaks over anyone else are to name but a few characteristics of a good chair. In this session it will be explained how to chair an effective meeting. You will be given tips on how to reach the goals of the meeting and ideas for running a productive meeting whilst sticking to time constraints.

Effective Event Management

Organising an event is a complicated process and there are many different areas that need to be considered. In this session you will be taken through all the different aspects of the organisation and learn how to effectively manage them to ensure you run a smooth and successful event.

Be Exciting and Safe

You want to organise fun and exciting new activities for your members. Learn how to do this while making sure you look after your members so they don’t end up in A&E. You have legal requirements in safety which can be quite daunting; these will be explained simply so that you can rest assured you’ve done what you need to.

Managing Your Membership More Effectively

Keeping track of what your society is up to and making sure everyone else knows about it can be a tough task. This session will help you examine the various ways of managing your membership from calendars, emails and other digital tools to more basic information management.

Meetings - The Secretary's Story

The Secretary organises the meetings and makes it happen; they are also the ones who keep the records so that the information can constantly be used to benefit the society. In this session you will be guided through the process of effectively organising and recording meetings, including a look at best practise and how you can get the information across with the least amount of time and paper!

Funding and the Finance Office

This session will guide you through the thrills and spills of the Union’s Financial Regulations, as well as who to see and what to do in the Union’s Finance Office. It will include a section on insurance policies held by the Union; your responsibilities and what to do in the unfortunate case of a claim. The General Secretary will also be on hand to talk you through the Societies Funding Policy; what types of funding are available and (most importantly!) how you can access it.

Simplifying Budgeting and Accounting

Writing budgets and keeping accounts may seem like a very daunting process, however with a bit of knowledge they can become a much more simple process. In this practical-based session you will first gain an understanding of the importance of budgeting before going on to familiarise yourself with the mechanics of both budget preparation and monitoring. We understand that you won’t want to spend all your time shuffling paper, so this session will highlight the key areas that you should focus on in order to minimise your workload when keeping the society accounts.

Make Your Publicity Stand Out Amongst the Crowd

This session will cover a wide variety of options for getting your message across. We’ll be looking at both LUSU’s offerings as well as other options from the University and other providers that are free or virtually so. We’ll also be looking at a variety of legal pitfalls you’ll need to avoid whilst staying creative and flexible and some best practise employed by the professionals.

Making it All Work

You’ve learnt it all, but what do you do with it? In this session the exec members will all be back together to work in groups. Each group will work on a relevant task to give everyone the opportunity to put what they have learnt throughout the day into practise in a simulated situation.
