An officer who is in the paid employment of the Union. They are elected and serve for one year, full-time.
Non-sabb or Non-sabbatical Officer:
A part-time officer, who serves while also undertaking their degree.
Constitution:
The rules of the Union. This is the document that expresses the aims of the union, as well as legally expressing the Unions limits, its responsibilities, and its decision-making arrangements. The Union may change this via a referendum or a quorate General meeting. It is a good reference for officers, and helps maintain the union as a continuous body, while also allowing for change and adaptability.
Quorum:
The minimum attendance for meetings of the Union. If quorum is not met, the meeting is not valid.
JCR:
Your college decision-making body. The JCRs are an integral part of the union.
F&GP:Finance and General Purposes Committee. This is an advisory group, dealing with the finances of the Union. As with all committees and advisory groups in the union, it is subordinate to Union Council
General Meeting:
The termly meeting of the Union, where officers report their achievements, members may voice their concerns, the constitution may be changed, and the long-term plans of the union are discussed. All members may attend and speak. This is often hailed as the most important event of the Unions term.
Referendum:
A vote on an issue considered very important to the Union. It may involve a change to policy, the introduction of new officers, or another major change. Previous referenda have included the prospective introduction of a Societies Officer and an Equal Opportunities officer.
Union Council:
Where all Union officers meet fortnightly to discuss policy, varying from the Union position on top-up fees (against), to the Unions position on Wham!'s "Wake me up before you go-go" (motion thrown out). Any member may attend, and it is held fortnightly on a Thursday at 6pm in the conference centre.
